The personification of self-righteousness

In the song Mack the Knife there’s a line about a body on the sidewalk “oozing” life. Last night there was a body, a living one, oozing self-righteousness. It was not on the sidewalk. It was at the speaker’s podium in the General Assembly. It was that of His Excellency Mr. Ron Prosor, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, presenting lies as truth before the vote which overwhelmingly recognized Palestine as a non-member observer state.

Peace, he asserted, “is a central value of Israeli society.” He went on: “The bible calls on us, ‘seek peace and pursue it’. Peace fills our art and poetry. It is a taught in our schools. It has been the goal of the Israeli people and every Israeli leader since Israel was re-established 64 years ago.”

What crap! (Dictionary definition – “excrement, rubbish, dirt, worthless nonsense”).

But am I being fair to Prosor? There’s a case for saying that I am not and it’s this. The Zionist (not Jewish) states does want peace, has always wanted peace. The problem is that it wants peace on its own terms, terms which require the surrender of the occupied and oppressed Palestinians to Zionism’s will; terms which give the them the choice of accepting a few crumbs from Zionism’s table or being removed from it in a final ethnic cleansing.

Until last night I thought that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu was the personification of self-righteousness, but Prosor is above even him in this field. Prosor’s self-righteousness is not only in his words as he speaks them, it’s in his eyes and his whole body language.

The message I got from watching and listening to him was this: “I know I’m a self-righteous son-of-a-bitch, and I know you know I am, but I don’t care. My country is the nuclear-armed superpower of its region. We don’t give a damn about this UN General Assembly. Only the Security Council matters and we – our leaders in Israel and our lobby here in the U.S – have the ability and the means to see to it that every American president vetoes any proposal that comes before the Security Council which is not to our liking.”

But still I found myself applauding Prosor for his performance, especially his concluding assertion that Israel wants peace and the Palestinians are “avoiding” it. Why?

The short answer was put into words by Yehoshafat Harkabi, Israel’s longest serving Director of Military Intelligence. In his book, Israel’s Fateful Hour, published in English in 1986, he wrote:

“No factor endangers Israel’s future more than self-righteousness, which blinds us to reality, prevents a complex understanding of the situation and legitimizes extreme behaviour.”

So I say to Prosor, Netanyahu, Lieberman and others – bring it on. Let’s have more and more of your self-righteousness.

Footnote

In response to the post above a very dear Jewish-American friend, Rich Forer, e-mailed me with this comment. “I saw Prosor on CNN last night. I could barely watch. I was filled with revulsion for the very reasons you describe. I hope others who watched his Goebbels-like performance also saw through his sleazy lies and phony claims that Israel has always wanted peace.”

    “Israel and peace”!!

It seems Ron Prosor is suffering from acute sense of Zionist self-denial.

“Our task is to recruit a barrier and once again put the fear of death into the Arabs of the area,” – Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli defense Minister (later prime minister of the Zionist entity).

  2. David King:

As soon as a zionist opens it’s mouth; they look the fool.

“Me too”, says I. Let them speak to a global audience. That would sound the death knell for zion.

  3. Jens pilegaard:

I think it is the smugness and arrogance that will eventully be the Zionist downfall. It is clear that their overconfident attitude is tied to their nuclear arsenal. But in reality what is it worth that nuclear arsenal as deterrent. It’s a small neighborhood…they can’t bomb most of their neighbors as they are too close to home…and they risk nuclear self contamination…on a large scale ….and if they end up exchanging a bomb with Iran ..there is no doubt which country will still be standing when the nuclear dust settles. Israel is just too small ..one strike and its over….of course there are the subs…but they can be neutralized ..they only have 3.
The world spoke yesterday. My country chose the wrong side of history together with our equally Zionist controlled neighbor Canada. When your only friends left are tiny pacific islands whose vote incidentally were bought and paid for by the zionist and who themselves may cease to exits in a few years due to global warming, what part of the writing on the wall don’t the Zionist see. I don’t think the world has ever experienced a greater example of self delusion.

  4. rosemerry:

Exactly, Alan. I tried to listen, but the conceited self-satsfied appearance and the “I am proud” made me stop. When I read all the lies, then hear the USA’s “Representatives” decide to stop the aid(!) to the PA (which aids the police to help Israel control the West Bank); then read about the new $100million nuclear facility the USA is building in Israel; then observe that of course not one cent will go from USA or Israel to try to rebuild their destruction in Gaza, I almost despair.

  5. jarjees:

    dear alan
i joined ur website and i have read alot of ur articles in the archives. really gud and informative particularly the uss liberty incident. it sickens and saddens me that the israelis get away with watever they do and the world leaders cant or wont do squat. like i say ‘zionists have usa and other world leaders by the balls, and wont let go till their agenda is completed’. it is particularly sickening and vomit inducing to see THE GREAT USA PRESIDENTS bend over one after the other and take crap from all these bigots and war mongers. i bet if just the uss liberty incident is reported as it happened, the outcry and the followng events will b enuf to terminate the relations with israel. but it aint gona happen. president johnson betrayed his country and oath and so have others that followed after him. wen obama was giving his famous cairo speach i was amazed at how ppl were sayng ‘he is gona change things. i told them he aint doin squat. just watch and see.

It’s not self righteousness or anything close to it that matters – it’s the original plan for eretz Yisrael that has never been forgotten. That is what motivates everything Israel does, from the disingenuous “peace process” to its tantrums of bombing Gazans to its petulant whining about anti-Semitism. It’s all a manipulation of world opinion; but in fact there is not so much emotion involved as cold calculation.

First, make the world think you are a victim. Then, tell the world your enemies are plotting to destroy you. Next, steal land by conquest and justify it by trotting out some hoary old narratives from ancient texts, and whip out the holocaust survivors, shmaltzy Hollywood movies and photos of Jews in concentration camps (yes, I’m cynical). After that, cry about how you want peace but those recalcitrant Palestinians are also trying to kill you. Don’t let the world see how you’ve become a homicidal maniac killing the occupied people you claim are so subhuman. (And don’t forget to tell the world how subhuman and evil they are while you’re at it.) Sit at the negotiation table and make ridiculous demands while you continue killing, brutalizing and stealing. Tell your citizens this is necessary. Tell the world, too. And don’t forget to hand out piles of money to those who will protect your dirty enterprise.

In the end, the world won’t know anything other than that you were a tiny country of displaced wanderers who fought and won. It’s so Hollywood, so “heartwarming,” and so bullshit.

But it’s not working. It’s unraveling. As we all know, eventually, no matter how carefully we wrap it up, garbage will start to smell.

  8. Mohamed Salem:

In a rare moment in my life I listned to someone who – in public – don’t feel any shy of expressing the exact opposite of what he really thinks and actes and furthomore knows that most of the audience is convinced he is not telling the truth.

  9. Sandy Cheyne:

Bravo Maryam. You’ve said it all.

  10. Chris:

The Guardian reports that “Netanyahu has ordered the construction of thousands of new homes in Jewish settlements in the occupied territories in what will be widely interpreted as retaliation for the United Nations vote to recognise a Palestinian state on Thursday.”

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/nov/30/israel-build-jewish-settlement-un-palestine

    The Zionists are poor losers.

‘. Dore Gold, a former Israeli ambassador to the UN, told the BBC that the Palestinian move was a “massive violation” of the Oslo peace accords.

He said that if the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, attempted to use the new status to declare an independent state then Israel would have to act and may go so far as “annexing territory”.’

How does the UN granting Palestine non-member observer status benefit it concretely?

  11. Bashar Arafat:

I applaud your dedication and tenacity in the favor of the oppressed Palestinian people. We need courageous people like you since most of us are ill-equipped verbally to face this world which sucks up to the Zionists. Thank you Alan Hart.

  12. Graham Griffiths:

Even though I am so happy that the vote has been passed overwhelmingly in the Palestinians’ favour, at the same time I am filled with despair at the thought that it will make little difference. Israel will continue stealing what land there is left on the West Bank and will arrogantly ignore any complaints made by the UN.

  13. JamesAt17:

Zionist’s. People who call themselves Jews but are not, but are of the synoguge of Satan. The bible says that too. Now go ahead and tell me Satan does not exsist.

  14. David King:

    Well said Maryam.

  15. Elna Najar:

Thank you very much for this post (and all of your other posts!), Alan. I had been searching for the words to describe this very disturbing man. It was the first time that I’d come across this Prosor character, and he sent chills down my spine. Even though I’m quite used to the unbearable attitude of Israeli officials, this one stood out and I could not quite put it into words. He’s got his own special brand of psychosis… very unsettling.
Your friend, Rich Forer, is spot-on, that was a very “Goebbels-like” performance, indeed (the irony..!). Glad I’m not the only one disturbed by this creep!

  16. pete:

Of course Israel wants piece. every piece of land they can grab and we will of couse say nothing because it might piss off our masters. What has becaome of our country, Lady Liberty eyes are showing sad wrinkles and her tits are beginning to sag. This is no longer the country I was raised in. We have become a nation of lackey,s and grovelers before The zionist cancer.
