Why, really, was the USS Liberty attacked by Israel?
What we are witnessing today in many nations, where more and more citizens are beginning to see an arrogant and insufferably self-righteous Israel as the obstacle to peace, is anti-Israelism, which is more accurately described as anti-Zionism. But as Harkabi warned, the danger is that what starts out as anti-Israelism could be transformed into anti-Semitism. My own view, which I know is shared in private by a growing number of eminent Jews, is that this will happen – I mean that there will be another great turning against the Jews, possibly starting here in America
- IF Israel stays on its present course;
- IF the Jews of the world do not then distance themselves from the Zionist state’s criminal behaviour and its denial of justice for the Palestinians; and
- IF Americans and Europeans among whom most Jews of the world live remain ignorant of the difference between Judaism and Zionism… And that is why I say the truth has to handled with great care and given its necessary context.
As some but perhaps not all of you will know, it was your first ever Secretary of Defense, James Forrestal, and General George C. Marshall when he was serving as Secretary of State, who took the lead in trying to persuade President Truman that support for Zionism’s colonial enterprise was not in America’s own best interests. Their views were shared by all of your relevant intelligence agencies of the time. In my book I offer explanations of why a deeply troubled President Truman did not take their advice.
In that historical light I think it’s not uninteresting that a serving American General of our time, General David H. Petraeus, has dared to say that continuing American support for Israel right or wrong is not in America’s best interests and is even damaging them. The Epilogue to the forthcoming Volume 3 of my book is titled Is Peace Possible? In it I ask this question:
Could it be that the stage is being set for a titanic struggle in which President Obama, after the mid-term elections, will have to chose between doing what the Zionist lobby and its stooges in Congress want and what America’s top military men know to be necessary if America’s own interests are to be best protected?
And I add this comment:
If they could speak from their graves, I imagine the two most senior executives who advised President Truman not to support Zionism’s colonial enterprise – Defense Secretary Forrestal and Secretary of State Marshall – would say, “Let’s hope so and that this time reason will prevail.”
I’ll end my remarks to you this evening by quoting a line from the Dear America introduction to Volume 1 of the American edition of my book. It’s a sort of open letter in which I am speaking directly to readers. In the very first sentence I say that if all of our children, wherever they live, are to have the prospect of a future worth having, the world needs America’s BEST..
Only the truth can bring out the best of America, and there’s no better place to start than with the truth about Israel’s attack on the U.S.S. Liberty. I salute your efforts to make this truth known, If you can assist my efforts to promote it and other related truths, it might be possible to bring out the best of America before it’s too late for us all.
Thank you.

Well said! I heard about this site via the Alex Jones show, and this speech is very topical at the current time. Hopefully the world wakes up so that we can minimise the damage. I have already emailed this to my 3 most trusted infowarriors.

A fine speech, Alan. I wish I could have been there to have at least seen the audience’s reactions to your words. In the aftermath of the flotilla massacre, it is imperative that America awaken to the reality of Zionism’s deadly machinations, whether they be a incident such as the USS Liberty, Operation Cast Lead, or the day-to-day torment of the Palestinian people as a tragic reality of an illegal occupation.

Thanks Alan. I have read a lot about the USS Liberty, but learnt a lot more. I despair when I read the comments of so many present Democratic Congress “representatives” of US population supporting the “selfdefense” of IDF commandoes attacking the Flotilla in the dead of night. Will they change? Can the people find Reps who support their own country?
All the best.

For the truth about the Liberty incident I suggest a book called “The Liberty Incident” written by a federal judge called A Jay Cristol. The author was awarded a PhD by the University of Miami for his dissertation about the Liberty incident.

A great article, as usual. Just two wee observations.
1) There’s nothing wrong with being a draft dodger. It often takes more courage to be one than just “go along” with the flow, especially when the flow is a toxic spill.
2) No need either to spend a great deal of time & energy to prove one’s not anti-Semitic when criticizing Israel. You either are or you are not. If you are it will show, sooner or later. If you’re not, no amount of “proof” will ever satisfy the mad mafia that Israel has become. Israel MUST be criticized. End of story. Any subsequent attacks from the said mafia are best ignored. I speak from direct experience.
All the best & keep them coming!

I agree with dolores 2 wee remarks about draft dodging and about spending(wasting) time proving one is not an anti-semitic…
this said yes it is important to be clear at all times and make the difference between a zionist and being a Jew. I have to be mindful because I know it would be very easy to become anti-semitic with the horrendous zionist policy of Israel, I am not sure whether this is not also a desired effect of the zionists: to make sure that anti-Semitism is on the rise so they can get more support from Jews all over and so yes it very very important to talk about the huge difference and thank you for doing so.

When the USS Liberty was attacked, before I served in Vietnam as Advisory Team Leader, I was the Intelligence Operations Officer of our 4th US Armored Division in Goeppingen, Germany. As soon as the news of the sinking of the “Liberty” came through our wire, I rushed the info to my boss, Colonel Aantero Aakkula, who had fought the Soviets during World War II. He immediately ordered me to rush the info to our division commander, General Sherrer. Before I left his office, the General commented about the Israelis: “With friends like these, we have no need of enemies”.

The Israelis were afraid that the Liberty was monitoring the movements in the area of a vessel from France that was carrying uranium.

The claim that Liberty was sent to “spy” on Israeli military maneuvers in the Sinai has no evidentiary basis — absolutely none. Liberty left Rota, Spain before the war started with no Hebrew Linguists on board — expect for one person named Baker who was a long-time Spanish linguist with prior (i.e., out-of-date by 10 years) training in Hebrew. At the time of Liberty’s departure, the Sinai was controlled by Egypt, and the timing and progress of a possible war was uncertain. Thus, at most, by the time Liberty arrived, any recording of Israeli communications in the Sinai would have been incidental to Liberty’s primary mission of monitoring and recording HF and VHF/UHF radio communications in the area to determine any degree of Soviet involvement.
Of course, the Israelis may have believed otherwise — and I suspect this was the case. From the Israeli’s perspective, Liberty’s arrival in the area was at a critical time and would have been highly suspicious and troublesome. Thus, your motive theory is very plausible, based on the Israeli’s mistaken belief (now your’s too) about Liberty true mission. Likely, this was the “mistake” made by the Israelis, as opposed to misidentifying the ship.

Mr. Hart,
With due respect for your background, I disagree with your contention that Zionism can be separated from Judaism or for that matter, the Jewish community.
People with Jewish names control most all forms of United States media. If what you say is true, then why don’t these Jews opposed to Zionism buy up a large block of our media and put the message out that THEY do not support Israel and THEY do not support Zionism? Why do we only seem to hear this message from Gentiles like you? Thank you.

All of us remember this premonitory movie of Ridley Scott: Alien.
We are exactly as in this movie, there is another passenger in the ship Earth: the Zionist.
Who did allow this monster to enter ?
The Military-Industrial & Financial Complex.
I hope women, as Sigourney Weaver, can save humanity from this evil.

@Koppers “for the truth about the Liberty incident I suggest a book called The Liberty Incident written by a federal judge A Jay Cristol” The author is suspected by many in the US of being an Israeli agent and is a zionist jew. Obviously the perfect person to write an unbiased book about the shameful attack on the Liberty…….NOT!! All the people guilty of covering up this war crime should be charged with treason

This gives the greatest reason for the “suicide” inflicted upon James Forrestal, one I’ve suspected but had little evidence for until now.

I have a feeling it was halfway through a false flag which was to be blamed on Syria when the USS Liberty managed to defend itself, and the government knew that and probably allowed it but covered it up once it failed. You never know.

You may be right in your conclusion as to the reason for the attack upon the Liberty, but I fear that it depends too greatly upon a misapprehension and an over-estimation of Lyndon Johnson. Surely, even with all their chutzpah, the Israelis would never have attempted such a thing without knowing in advance that LBJ was in their hip pocket. (One can say the same thing for the conspirators behind the JFK assassination.). The fact that LBJ called back the rescue planes and ordered a cover-up of what happened supports this thesis. The most likely explanation for the attack, to my mind, is that it was a false-flag operation to be blamed on the Egyptians.
