Obama’s Hagel test

A year later in a book by Aaron David Miller he was correctly quoted as saying “The Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people.” That enraged and still enrages the Zionist lobby and all who do its bidding, including Arizona senator John McCain who, thank goodness, didn’t make it to the White House when he ran against Obama.

McCain actually said: “I know of no Jewish lobby. I know there is strong support for Israel but I know of no Jewish lobby. I hope he (Hagel) will identify who that is.”

McCain wasn’t challenging Hagel’s imprecise terminology. He was asserting that there is no lobby organized by some Jewish Americans who give and demand unconditional support for all of Greater Israel’s policies and actions.

If Hagel is nominated for the post of Secretary of Defense, I think he would be well advised to respond to McCain’s challenge during his confirmation hearing. And I would have him do it with something like these words:

I was in error when I said the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people. That was an imprecise use of language on my part. I should have said the Zionist lobby intimidates a lot of people… Are you really saying, Senator McCain, that you know of no Zionist lobby which intimidates very many members of Congress and our presidents?

I also have a question for those including some here today who are seeking to demonize me. What is so objectionable about my stated view that the duty of the President and Congress is to put America’s own best interests first and not allow them to become subservient to Israel’s interests?

Hagel’s other past sins include his call for the U.S. to engage with Hamas and his stated view that there is no military solution to Iran’s nuclear problem. (I can almost hear America’s military chiefs saying behind closed doors, “That’s the man we want and need as our political master.”)

In its efforts to demonize Hagel the Zionist lobby and its associates are not having things all their own away.

Richard Armitage, a former deputy secretary of state in the Republican administration of George “Dubya” Bush, said he didn’t think the attacks on Hagel were fair. He went on: “I’ve known him quite closely for the last 15 years and I’ve never heard him utter any anti-Semitic statement. If he used the term ‘Jewish lobby,’ that’s a poor choice of words and I’m sure he’ll speak for himself on that… I happen to know the guy. He’s not owned by anybody, he happens to think for himself, and this apparently causes some fear in some cases. He’s got an unerring bullshit sensor, he’s got real stones (I presume that means balls in English-English) and he doesn’t mind telling you what his opinion is, which will stand him in very good stead in the Pentagon if the president nominates him.”

Another who has come to Hagel’s defense is Brent Scowcroft, the former air force general and Republican national security adviser. He said: “Senator Hagel is one of the most well-respected and thoughtful voices on both foreign and domestic policy. At an uncertain time in America – with a significant debt burden, a polarized Congress, and a host of challenges facing the international community, I am confident Senator Hagel will provide a vibrant, no-nonsense voice of logic and leadership to the United States.”

Obama’s decision, expected very soon, about whether or not to nominate Hagel will give us the first significant indication since his re-election of whether or not he is going to continue to dance to Zionism’s tune or, as Hagel might put it, continue to be intimidated by its lobby.

  1. Rehmat:

Mr. Hart, I agree, the so-called “Israel Lobby (AIPAC)” is in fact a front for over 50 Israel Jewish lobby groups. And these groups support both parties – though Jewish voters, historically, have been more Democratic than Republican.

The term “neo-conservative” is also misleading as all the leaders of that warmongering cult – are Zionist Jews and Christians. American blogger Roger Tucker once corrected me on that. He claimed that the proper terminology should be “Zio-conservatives”.

Chuck Hagel, like Charles Freedman, not anti-Israel. Both, though, happen to be anti-Zionist regime. Jewish Lobby’s major problem is Hagel believes that American voters elect their congressmen and senators to serve American interests and not Israel’s interests – whether it’s in occupied Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran and the rest of the Muslim world.

In his book “America: Our Next Chapter” he writes about Iran: “Isolating nations is risky. It turns them inward, and makes their citizens susceptible to the most demagogic fear mongering.” The answer, he says, is engagement. “Distasteful as we may find that country’s rulers, the absence of any formal governmental relations with Iran ensures that we will continue to conduct this delicate international relationship through the press and speeches, as well as through surrogates and third parties, on issues of vital strategic importance to our national interests. Such a course can only result in diplomatic blind spots that will lead to misunderstandings, miscalculation, and, ultimately, conflict.”

  2. bryan:

In times past, a smear in the form anti-semite usually resulted in the end of the discussion, and the dismissal of the message. I find your dialogue encouraging, Mr. Hart, in that you are advancing the form of rhetoric in a way that the smear is much less likely to stick – IMHO. This is all well and good in the local context of this forum, but I can only wonder if this discussion more broadly is maturing sufficiently to allow Senator Hagel’s views to be aired fairly.

The problem is, I and many others have long suspected Obama’s apparently harder stance toward Israel to be superficial at best.
For the record, I support virtually nothing else done by Obama. Senator Hagel’s approval as SecDef might be a step toward allaying some of that particular concern, but Israel’s machinations have often proven deep. We should withhold judgement until we see signs of real progess like a cessation of the war drums toward Iran, and a real justice in Palestine.

    Nonetheless, it must start somewhere.

  3. Richard Steven Hack:

I don’t think it’s going to matter in the end whether Hagel is SecDef, either in regards to the Palestinian issue, or more importantly, with regard to an Iran war.

These people are front men. Obama is a front man. He has zero authority to go against the people who financed his entire political career. They will all do what the ruling elite of the US demands they do. They may drag their feet, they may make public comments opposing certain things.

But in the end the Iran war will happen anyway.

73 US Senators just signed an AIPAC petition demanding continued squeezing of Iran via sanctions. That means at least 73 Senators in the US Senate are directly working for the Zionist Lobby (I tend to agree with the re-designation but it’s unlikely to stick) and Israel.

Hagel cannot stand up to that and neither can Obama.

My opinion is that the zionists have stigmatized themselves. Their role in American politics and the consequences are a clear path for US citizenry to follow. This trajectory is inline with my forecasted outcome for zion.

I hope our president has the balls to nominate Hagel as sec of defense. Who gives a shit if the senate confirms him or not, He is the president and he can tell the senate to go pound salt in their ass. If O.Bama caves in on this one,it is all over for then, admit it we are Israel,s bitch. I am pushing 80 yrs old and I cannot believe what has become of our country.

  9. maryam:

A moot point since yesterday Obama nominated John Kerry, a good little zionist lapdog. But not before Hagel’s supporters insisted that Hagel would promise to make Israel’s security a “highest priority.” Pffffft.

  10. Nelson Wight:

Alan Hart, you certainly are a beautiful breath of fresh air in today’s wierd world. Keep it up. You have all my admiration!

  11. Rehmat:

On a personal note: I think Hagel’s nomination could be Obama’s PR stunt to fool Americans that he is more loyal to United States than Israel. Like in case of Chase Freedman, Obama is doomed to fall on Lobby’s knees – unless Obama and Hagel manage to convince the Lobby that they’re quite willing to share bed with Netanyahu regardless what Hagel may have said in the past about not going for a military attack against the Islamic Republic. Furthermore, Hagel may change his stand on Iran once appointed – as Dick Cheney did after becoming country’s vice-president. In 1995, Cheney asked for more trade relations with Iran and Libya. However, after becoming vice-president, Cheney even linked al-Qaeda and 9/11 to the Islamic Republic.

I am a Jew who supports Israel. Don’t let us down. Please withdraw Chuck Hegel’s name for Defense Minister. He is an anti semite that supports Hamas. We do not need a person like him
Hegel in your Administration. This is a slap in the face to Jews and Zionists. Israel needs America, but America needs Israel, too.

  16. admin:

Why does America need Israel (beyond having it as a thug to bully the Arabs)?

  17. maryam:

Alan, its big corporations and banks need it. Israel is a major buyer of weapons from the US, and a seller of technology including surveillance. Israel develops weapons and tests them on Palestinians. There is also, of course, an interesting financial web involving rich American Jews investing in Israeli business ventures, including illegal settlements.

It’s always about money. If somebody wasn’t getting rich (or richer) from this situation, it wouldn’t exist.

  18. maryam:

“A significant issue that came up in the assembly, with strong implications for our movements in the United States, is that of policing and surveillance, and Israel’s role in creating an international security regime. For decades, Palestine has been a testing ground for developing weapons and tactics of population control, which are then exported around the globe through Israel’s multi-billion dollar Homeland Security industry. Israel’s skills in population control, surveillance and military occupation have resulted in placing it at the forefront of an industry that develops, manufactures and markets technologies used by armies and police around the world for the purpose of repression and to maintain vastly unequal societies.
Israeli companies and the State receive billions of dollars each year for programs like the Law Enforcement Exchange Program, which sends police from around the United States to train in Israel. Through this program and others like it, the most repressive police tactics are exchanged between Israel and notorious police forces in the United States. For example, in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana National Guard was trained by the Israeli military in crowd control. Similarly the Oakland Police Department trained in Israel prior to its violent crackdown on the Occupy movement.
Furthermore, the Israeli government and private corporations are contracted by the US government to build the US-Mexico Wall, provide surveillance technology and train border and security personnel. Elbit Systems Ltd., an Israeli “defense” corporation, is building both the Apartheid Wall in Palestine and the US-Mexico Wall.”

John McCain followed his father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, into the United States Navy, graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he was almost killed in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. In October 1967, while on a bombing mission over Hanoi, he was shot down, seriously injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was a prisoner of war until 1973. McCain experienced episodes of torture, and refused an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer. His war wounds left him with lifelong physical limitations.^……
