Zionism as a Godfather of Violent Islamic Fundamentalism

In the immediate aftermath of Hamas’s bloody confrontation with the al-Qaeda inspired Jund Ansar Allah (Soldiers of the Companions of God), imagine a headline something like this: Israeli PM Netanyahu thanks Hamas for taking on Islamic fanatics.

Of course that is pure fantasy.

If Zionism was interested in peace on something other than terms which require the Palestinians to abandon all hope for even a minimum amount of justice, congratulating Hamas would be a smart thing for Netanyahu or any Israeli leader to do.

The problem is that pragmatic Hamas has become as big a threat to Zionism’s colonial enterprise as the pragmatic Arafat was. I mean that Hamas now is, as Arafat became, willing to live with an Israel inside its borders as they were on the eve of the 1967 war, with either East Jerusalem the capital of the Palestinian state or, better still, the whole of Jerusalem an open and undivided city and the capital of two states.

One of the great and tragic ironies of history is that there would have been no Hamas if Israel had been prepared to end of its occupation of all Arab land grabbed in 1967 and do the two-state business with Arafat. (It is a fact that Israel assisted Hamas to get established as a rival to Arafat’s Fatah, which was not at the time the quisling organisation it became after Arafat’s death).

Another great irony is that there would have been no Hizbollah if Israel had not invaded Lebanon all the way to Beirut and occupied the south. And it’s almost certainly true that the Islamic Republic of Iran would not have had significant influence in Lebanon without Zionism as midwife to Hizbollah.

There is a very powerful case for saying that Zionism, assisted by Western support for it right or wrong, is a godfather of violent Islamic fundamentalism.

If the Zionist state won’t allow Hamas to be a party to negotiations, it will become, like the Fatah, irrelevant. In that event, one of two things most probably will happen. Either the Palestinians, most of them, will give up in despair and accept crumbs from Zionism’s table. Or they, many of them, will give their support, no doubt reluctantly, to violent Islamic fundamentalists. Jund Ansar Allah and what it represents has lost a battle but not the war.

Because it needs enemies in order to justify its crimes, past, present and future, Zionism will be happy with either of those scenarios.
